Celebrating Molly’s 103rd Birthday at Eastside Gardens

A couple of weeks ago, here at Eastside Gardens Care Home, we were incredibly proud to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone as one of our much-loved residents, Molly Gillon, turned 103.

We were delighted to welcome a very special squad of guests to join us, as serving members of the Royal Air Force attended Molly’s birthday celebration alongside her family, friends, and our team here at Eastside Gardens. RAF personnel presented Molly with her birthday cake as she shared memories of her incredible wartime service.

Molly played a vital role during the Second World War as an RAF radar operator, helping pilots returning to Northumberland from fighting the Luftwaffe safely find their way home during the wartime blackout. Working deep underground, Molly followed radar signals to detect enemy aircraft and obstacles, guiding RAF pilots to land safely in the dead of night — an essential and courageous contribution during a critical time in history.

As soon as she turned 18, Molly answered the call to serve. Alongside other young women, she reported to Newcastle Central Station before travelling to Wales for training. Over the following years, Molly was stationed at Morecambe in Lancashire, Ouston in County Durham, and finally RAF Northstead in Northumberland, now known as HMP Acklington.

While stationed in the North East, Molly attended a dance at The Junction Inn in Morpeth, where she met her future husband, George (Geordie) Gillon. After welcoming their first two children, the family returned home to Tyneside, where they had two more children. Although George sadly passed away at the age of just 47, Molly remained surrounded by the love of her growing family and is now a proud great-grandmother.

We feel hugely privileged to know and care for Molly here at Eastside Gardens. She is a truly lovely lady and an inspiration to us all, and we were honoured that her friends, family, and the RAF joined us to celebrate this very special 103rd birthday.

It was a wonderful occasion for everyone involved as we came together to celebrate Molly’s incredible life and service. 🎂✈️

Caring for Those Who Cared for Their Country: Lifestyle Care Launches a Powerful New Partnership

We have officially launched a new partnership with Veterans for Veterans in Care – a charity dedicated to supporting former servicemen and women living in care homes across the region. The event we recently hosted at one of our homes was more than symbolic: it marked the beginning of a year-long fundraising campaign aimed at honouring and supporting those who once served their country.

A proud group of former Army and Navy personnel arrived at the home to help kick off the initiative. Their presence set the tone for what this collaboration is truly about: connection, recognition, and ensuring that no veteran is left feeling forgotten.

We have committed to placing collection boxes in all 19 of our care homes across both Lifestyle Care & Prestwick Care. These boxes will be open for donations from staff, residents, visitors, and the wider community, and at the end of the 12-month campaign, Prestwick Care & Lifestyle Care will match every pound raised.

It’s a commitment that speaks volumes, and one that comes at a time when the need is significant. According to the 2021 census, more than 26,000 armed forces veterans currently live in care homes in England and Wales. Many of them are at risk of losing the sense of camaraderie and belonging they had in the Forces, something Veterans for Veterans in Care aims to rebuild.

Lee Moore, who served with the Royal Pioneer Corps and is now an active member of the charity, captured this perfectly. “They are our forgotten army,” he said. He explained how the transition into a care home can sometimes lead to veterans feeling disconnected from the family-like bonds they once had. “It can be hard for them if they have no one to share their memories with who really knows and understands what they went through, the good times and the bad and that is where we come in.”

Supporting this work was an easy and heartfelt decision. CEO Bunty Malhotra described it simply as “a privilege” to care for those who served. “Our care homes are at the very heart of their communities, communities these men and women served to preserve,” he said. “We hope those communities will get behind our campaign and help us make a real difference.”

With the launch now underway, the next 12 months will be an opportunity for people across the North East to show their appreciation for the veterans who once dedicated their lives to protecting others. Whether through a small donation or spreading the word, every gesture will help strengthen the support network for veterans in care.

Local Business Goes Above and Beyond for Eastside Gardens

At Eastside Gardens, we believe that strong community links are just as important as high-quality care. Every year at Christmas, we are reminded of how powerful kindness and connection can be and one local business owner continues to go above and beyond to make the festive season truly special for our residents.

Lyndsey, who runs the small business Scentaholic, is based just across the road from our Eastside Gardens care home. For the past four years, she has created a wonderful Christmas tradition that brings together the local community and our residents in the most heart-warming way.

In the run-up to Christmas, Lyndsey puts up a Christmas tree in her shop and decorates it with tags, each one bearing the name of a resident from Eastside Gardens. Members of the local community are invited to choose a tag, purchase a gift for that resident, and return it to the shop. Lyndsey then carefully delivers all of the presents to the care home, ensuring every resident has something special to open on Christmas Day.

What makes this gesture even more meaningful is Lyndsey’s generosity beyond the tags. She kindly donates additional gifts each year for residents who may not have visitors during the festive period, helping to ensure that no one feels forgotten or alone at Christmas.

This initiative has become a cherished tradition for our residents, bringing excitement, joy, and a strong sense of belonging. It also highlights the importance of community links in care settings. When local businesses and residents come together, it creates a supportive environment where older people feel valued, connected, and part of the wider community.

We are incredibly grateful to Lyndsey and everyone at Scentaholic, as well as the kind members of the local community who take part each year. Their generosity reminds us that small acts of kindness can make a big difference, especially at a time of year when togetherness matters most.

From everyone at Eastside Gardens, thank you for helping to make Christmas brighter for our residents, year after year.
